The standard chemotherapy regimen for bone cancer has remained largely unchanged for several decades. However, modern laboratory research is shifting toward precision medicine, developing drugs that act like guided missiles to strike cancer cells while ignoring healthy tissue.

  • The Problem with Standard Chemo: Traditional chemotherapy acts like a systemic carpet-bombing—it kills rapidly dividing cells, which includes your tumor, but also your hair follicles, stomach lining, and immune cells, causing intense side effects.
  • Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs): Researchers have discovered that osteosarcoma cells express unique surface proteins (such as MT1-MMP, CD276, and LRRC15) that healthy tissues do not have. Scientists are creating ADCs, which combine a synthetic antibody designed to seek out these specific proteins with a powerful cellular toxin payload.
  • The “Bicycle Toxin” Innovation: In preclinical testing, a specialized delivery system called a Bicycle Toxin Conjugate (BTC) successfully delivered treatment directly to the tumor cells. This targeted approach showed remarkable tumor destruction in laboratory models with minimal toxic exposure to the rest of the body.
